Psychiatric Training
Following his medical education, Dr. Merter practiced internal medicine in Germany for two years before returning to Switzerland to specialize in psychiatry. He completed his clinical training at the renowned Burghölzli Psychiatric Hospital and the Zurich University Hospital, where he earned his PhD in biological psychiatry.
Early Life and Medical Education
Born in Istanbul in 1947, Dr. Mustafa Merter began his education in Turkey before moving to Switzerland. He earned his Swiss Federal High School Diploma from Lausanne Lemania High School in 1969 and his medical degree from the Lausanne Medical Faculty in 1975.
Early Work
Dr. Merter's early work was shaped by the Jungian and Existential Analysis schools, alongside Irvin Yalom's group therapy methods. His evolving interest in human consciousness led him to found the Transpersonal Psychology Association of Türkiye in 2005.
Later on, Dr. Merter began to notice that true healing requires the study of the nafs (the spiritual self) rather than merely the psyche and began to research how Islamic spiritualism (sufism) can be integrated into modern clinical work.
A New Paradigm: Nafs Psychology
As a result of these studies, he developed a new psychological approach (school of thought) that he named Nafs Psychology. His research has introduced unexpected new dimensions to the structural and functional theories of Western psychology.
Among its principal contributions are the Multi-Level Existential Psychic Structure, the Lower and Higher Unconscious Categories, and the Psychology of Human Subtle States and especially the Spiritual Heart.
In addition, this understanding of the structure of the nafs has significantly contributed to dream interpretation and dream research, leading to the identification of more than thirty distinct dream categories, with new categories continuing to emerge. He published the results of this work in two seminal books The Nine Hundred Storey Man (2012) and The Psychology of the Nafs and the Language of Dreams (2014).
In June 2026, he founded the Nefs İlimleri Foundation in Üsküdar, Istanbul, where he continues to conduct his academic and research activities. His forthcoming book, Human-Centered Physics, is currently in the publication process, while his work A Psychological Ta’wil (Interpretive Exegesis) of the Qur’an is in the final editorial stage, with the first volume scheduled for publication in the near future.
A Lifetime of Achievements
In 2024, Mustafa Merter was awarded the Necip Fazıl Idea-Research Award for his critical reading of Western-centric modern psychological theories, his groundbreaking work in the fields of psychology and psychiatry, and his works reflecting his intense focus on current social issues.
